The U.S. CULCON Secretariat hosted a seventh annual summit on August 24, 2017, attended by more than sixty participants from thirty organizations involved with U.S.-Japan exchanges. The focus of the meeting was The U.S.-Japan Partnership: U.S. State Department Priorities in Public Diplomacy, Educational, and Cultural Affairs. Alyson Grunder, Senior Bureau Official, (ECA) and Julie Chung, Director, Office of Japanese Affairs, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, discussed recent developments in U.S.-Japan relations and the significance of people-to-people exchanges. Discussion also focused on evaluation and impact assessment for work that is sometimes difficult to quantify.
The organizations gathered requested a follow-on meeting to learn about and develop common metrics language, both qualitative and quantitative, to use community-wide. This would be used as a tool for strategic planning and for making the impact of the community’s work more accessible to the public and potential funders.
IIE provided conference space for the event in their Washington, DC offices and IIE President Dr. Allan Goodman made welcoming remarks.

U.S.–Japanese University Partnerships on the Rise
….TeamUp, a program of the U.S.- Japan Bridging Foundation, promotes partnerships between institutions in both countries. The CULCON-inspired initiative is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.
While partnerships boost better understanding between the two cultures, there are many practical reasons to set up collaborations between institutions, Fields says. For both U.S. and Japanese students, these initiatives allow both sides to plan how to transfer academic credits, keep tuition costs affordable, and make suitable housing arrangements. “The idea is that if it’s all figured out in advance, it’s a much smoother process for everyone involved,” Fields says. “Partnerships allow for innovations. They can lead to faculty collaborative research and engagement on an administrative level. We have learned that there is tremendous interest and will to set up partnerships— both to give students an international experience abroad and to internationalize the campus. Everybody is looking to internationalize the way that their students think because of the global environment in which we’re operating.”

As we approach the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, the CULCON Arts Dialogue Committee (ADC) is launching a new campaign: Arts Japan 2020. Arts Japan 2020 will be a recognizable, developed and strategic effort to highlight Japanese arts and culture in the United States. Arts Japan 2020 will encompass four functions: 1) Collect information on Japan-related cultural programming across the United States; 2) Brand programming with the campaign name and logo; 3) Disseminate information about the branded Japan-related cultural programming via social and traditional media, including a dedicated website; and 4) Encourage organizations across the United States to develop Japan-related programming to
include in the campaign.
In addition to providing Arts Japan 2020 with a new visual calling card, the winner will receive recognition on the campaign website and a cash award in the amount of $3,000.
How to Enter:
Please send your design/s to Pamela Fields at email@example.com by COB (ET) Wednesday, March 29. You may enter as many designs as you would like. Submit your design in a high-resolution graphic, preferably in .ai/.eps/.png/.gif/.jpg form.
The winning design will be selected by members of the CULCON ADC. The ADC may request edits before finalizing the design of the winning entry; the winner will be expected to comply in a timely manner. The winning entry will become the property of CULCON ADC.
The ADC is a program of the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON), a binational advisory panel that serves to elevate and strengthen the vital cultural and educational foundations of the U.S.-Japan relationship, and to strengthen connections between U.S. and Japan leadership in those fields.
The Arts Japan 2020 campaign is funded by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, an independent federal government agency that strengthens the U.S.-Japan relationship through educational, cultural, and intellectual exchange.

U.S. CULCON Secretariat, the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC), and U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation (USJBF) in Washington, DC are seeking up to THREE 2017 summer interns to support current initiatives, which include activities promoting U.S.-Japan cultural, educational and people-to-people exchange. Interns will be working from a small office in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment and will be expected to be both proactive and flexible in completing assignments. Duties include disseminating information via social media, and supporting TeamUp and other campaigns, among other research- and program-related activities.
Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students and are expected to have excellent research, internet, communication and organizational skills and some knowledge of Japan and/or Japanese language (more…)
