Yoshio Yamawaki entered the Science and Technology Agency in 1984. He then served as Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna; Director of the International Education Division, Elementary and Secondary Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT); Professor at Hokkaido University; Director of the Promotion Policy Division of the Research Promotion Bureau (MEXT); Director of Minister’s Secretariat (MEXT); and Deputy Director-General of the Sports and Youth Bureau as well as of the Research Promotion Bureau (MEXT).  He assumed his current position as Director-General for International Affairs (MEXT) in November 2014.
