Summit of U.S.-Japan Related Organizations

CULCON convened its third suSONY DSCmmit of U.S.-Japan related organizations on Friday, August 16 in Washington, DC. The focus of the meeting was to share and discuss the Recommendations and Report recently released by the CULCON Education Task Force (ETF) and to brainstorm about how to move forward with implementation of the recommendations. In the past decade, the number of Japanese students in the U.S. has decreased by half, impacting the development of the next generation of stewards of the U.S.-Japan relationship. The Report includes recommendations about what the Japanese and U.S. public and private sectors can do to develop global talent and reverse this trend. Representatives of more than 20 organizations  joined Mr. Marc Knapper, Director, Office of Japanese Affairs, U.S. Department of State, who spoke about the importance of increasing the quantity and quality of student exchanges to the US-Japan relationship, and ways in which the US government can work toward achieving this goal and Dr. Susan Pharr, Edwin O. Reischauer Professor of Japanese Politics, Harvard University, who also served on CULCON and the ETF, who also spoke about the importance of study abroad and the steps Japan and the U.S. should take to promote it.
