The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and CULCON are deeply saddened by the passing of Shay Youngblood, a distinguished author and playwright. Ms. Youngblood was an integral part of JUSFC and CULCON, first as a U.S.-Japan Creative Artist Fellowship recipient and since 2021 as commissioner and panelist. Her insightful storytelling not only enriched the literary community but also fostered a profound connection between the United States and Japan. Her contributions to U.S.-Japan relations through her nuanced narratives and exploration of universal themes leave an enduring legacy of cross-cultural understanding and empathy.
“Shay approached life with determination, grace, and positivity,” said Paige Cottingham-Streater, JUSFC’s Executive Director and Secretary General of U.S. CULCON. “Her warmth, generosity, and commitment to the arts and the U.S.-Japan relationship will be deeply missed.” JUSFC and U.S. CULCON Chair Charles Lake remarked, “Shay Youngblood’s impact extended far beyond her written words. She brought a unique perspective and boundless creativity to the Commission and CULCON. Her loss will be greatly felt within the U.S.-Japan cultural exchange community.”
